Online Treatment Service For Male Impotence To Be Launched By Chelsea And Westminster And DrThom, UK

Published by poster under Uncategorized

Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust becomes the
first NHS body to venture into online treatment by launching a remote
treatment service for erectile dysfunction in partnership with DrThom
(), the UK’s leading online healthcare provider.
Chelsea and Westminster and DrThom will make it easier for the 2.3 million
UK men who suffer from erectile dysfunction to access treatment by offering
a properly regulated, safe and affordable online treatment service. Only
10% of UK men who suffer from erectile dysfunction currently seek treatment
for the condition.
Chelsea and Westminster is one of the UK’s leading providers of sexual
health services. The Trust already has a proven track record of innovation
by, for example, sending sexual health test results to patients by text
message and enabling patients to request clinic appointments online.
Revenue generated by this new service will be reinvested in NHS care.
By working with DrThom to launch a new online treatment service for erectile
dysfunction, Chelsea and Westminster hopes to help more men seek treatment
for the condition which can be an early symptom of wider health needs
including generalised cardiovascular problems.
Dr Simon Barton, Clinical Director for HIV and sexual health services at
Chelsea and Westminster, says: "We hope that the launch of this service will
be an important step in helping to improve standards of online healthcare in
the UK. All clinical aspects of this new service are overseen by Chelsea and
Westminster and all the doctors who prescribe treatment online are NHS
specialists in sexual health."
Dr Thomas Van Every, Medical Director at DrThom, says "In an ideal world,
all men who suffer from erectile dysfunction would go to their GP for help.
The reality is that embarrassment often prevents men from seeking treatment.
By partnering with Chelsea and Westminster, DrThom will be able to offer a
specialist, trustworthy and regulatory compliant online service that we see
as a major step forward in men’s healthcare."
Facts about erectile dysfunction
According to the Sexual Dysfunction Association, 2.3 million men in the UK
are estimated to suffer from erectile dysfunction. Only 10% of sufferers
seek treatment. 9 out of 10 men who suffer from erectile dysfunction don’t
tell their GP and 6 out of 10 don’t even tell their partners. 2 out of 10
sufferers said erectile dysfunction was the cause of their relationship
break-up.
Facts about the new service
A patient using the service will register on the DrThom website and complete
a free online questionnaire. The questionnaire and subsequent dialogue
allow a doctor to assess a patient’s suitability for treatment. To answer
the questionnaire, a patient will need to know their blood pressure. If a
doctor judges that treatment is suitable, the patient has the opportunity to
trial the treatment service for ??45. Patients pay online using a debit or
credit card. A doctor will be able to prescribe all common treatments such
as Viagra, Cialis and Levitra. DrThom will send treatment as first class
recorded delivery. To receive follow-up and ongoing treatment, a patient
will need to contact DrThom via their online patient record and tell a
doctor whether they suffered any side-effects and whether initial treatment
was effective. To comply with General Medical Council (GMC) guidelines on
remote prescribing, a patient will be given the name and GMC number of the
doctor who prescribed treatment.
Facts about the regulatory environment for online prescribing
The GMC sets clear requirements that have to be met when a doctor prescribes
treatment without meeting a patient face to face.
The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) regulates how
medicines are promoted. The MHRA’s publication ‘The Blue Guide’ gives clear
guidelines that govern how one can advertise services that may result in
patients being prescribed prescription-only medicines.
The Healthcare Commission regulates and inspects private healthcare
providers to ensure that they meet national minimum standards of healthcare.
Online healthcare providers are not exempt from the rules that govern who
has to ‘register’ with the Healthcare Commission.
Facts about Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust
Chelsea and Westminster is a leading NHS Foundation Trust and was one of 5
trusts highlighted by Monitor, the Foundation Trust regulator, for achieving
strong financial performance, meeting all healthcare targets and national
core standards in 2006/07.
Facts about Dr Thom
DrThom is the only medical service formally regulated by the Healthcare
acheter levitra mastercard Commission to prescribe treatment remotely. DrThom was set up and is
overseen by Dr Thomas Van Every, a doctor working at Chelsea and
Westminster’s Victoria Clinic for HIV and Sexual Health.

Rexahn Pharmaceuticals Initiates Phase II Trial For ZoraxelTM To Treat Erectile Dysfunction

Published by poster under Uncategorized

Rexahn Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (AMEX:RNN), a biopharmaceutical company dedicated to the discovery, development, and commercialization of innovative treatments for cancer, central nervous system disorders, sexual dysfunction and other unmet medical needs, announced that the Company has initiated a Phase II clinical trial for its lead clinical compound ZoraxelTM, for the treatment of Erectile Dysfunction (ED). ZoraxelTM is being developed as an orally administered, on-demand-use tablet.
Zoraxel™ Phase II trial is a double-blind, placebo-controlled study. This multi-center trial is expected to be complete by the end of 2008.
Commenting on today’s news, Dr. Chang H. Ahn, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Rexahn, noted, "We are very pleased to announce the initiation of another Phase II trial. ZoraxelTM will prove itself a more effective, less toxic therapy for patients with erectile dysfunction."
About ZoraxelTM
ZoraxelTM is being developed as an immediate release tablet and has a well-established and excellent safety profile, different from current market leading PDE-5 inhibitors with many side effects (priapism, severe hypotension, myocardial infarction, sudden death, increased intraocular pressure and sudden hearing loss). Zoraxel™ is a dual neurotransmitter enhancer in the brain, and thus, acts through the central nervous system that regulates sexual functions, whereas the PDE-5 inhibitors work in the peripheral blood vessels and affect only erectile function. In the model studies, ZoraxelTM has been shown to significantly improve all three functions of sexual activity, i.e. sexual arousal, erection, and release. As such, ZoraxelTM may be a more effective ED treatment for patients who are both responsive and unresponsive to PDE-5 inhibitors.
About Erectile Dysfunction (ED)
ED is defined as the consistent inability to attain and maintain an erection sufficient for satisfactory sexual intercourse. It is estimated to affect up to 30 million men in the United States, with 52% of men between the ages of 40 and 70 reporting difficulty with erectile function. By the year 2025, it is estimated that 322 million men worldwide will suffer from some degree of sexual dysfunction. Clinical management of ED has progressed substantially in recent years. The advancement of phosphodiesterase-5 (PDE-5) inhibitor therapeutics quickly followed the scientific understanding of the nitric oxide (NO) signaling mechanism in erectile tissue. Adverse events affecting the vascular system have been a major concern with drugs that regulate that response. Investigations into the neurotransmission involved in penile erection, hormone actions involved in this response, and biochemical signal transduction processes within the erectile tissue, are indicative of significant areas of scientific pursuit.

Aussie blokes in denial about beer guts

Published by poster under Uncategorized

Men’s Health News
Scientists from the Queensland University of Technology say when it comes to being overweight and obese, Australian men are in denial.

According to the study into perceptions of weight by Dr Katrina Giskes from the Institute for Health and Biomedical Innovation, men are inclined to underestimate their weight status, whereas women are more likely to overestimate their weight.
Dr. Giskes says this makes it much more difficult to deal with men who are overweight.
Among the leading causes of death among Australians overweight and obesity are key risk factors and public health campaigns aiming to tackle these factors emphasise increasing physical activity and adopting a healthy diet.
Dr. Giskes says while there are some psychological benefits to positive perceptions of weight status, deceiving yourself you weigh less than you do makes it easier to ignore public health campaigns encouraging healthier food and more active lifestyles.
Dr. Giskes suggests such campaigns may prove to be unsuccessful and possibly harmful if the way people perceive their weight status, remains unaddressed.
She says the challenge is to promote this awareness differentially between gender and socio-economic groups.
For the study data from the National Health Survey of more than 34,000 men and women was used and it revealed that men from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds were even more likely to ignore the health risks associated with their beer gut.
The research found that while 37.4 per cent of women were overweight or obese, 42.8 per cent considered they were and this was more so amongst well-off, well-educated women.
This group of women are also those most likely to develop body image problems and eating disorders.
The research is published in the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Public Health.

Health policy for men in the pipeline

Published by poster under Uncategorized

Men’s Health News
Plans are in the pipeline to raise awareness of health issues which affect men in particular.
The Federal Health Minister Nicola Roxon says the government has set in motion plans for the development of Australia’s first health policy for men based on a draft document developed in 1996.
The Health Minister says a discussion paper followed by consultations across the country over the next 12 months, will raise awareness of preventable problems and specific health challenges which men need to deal with.
Ms Roxon says the resistance amongst men with regard to seeking treatment is an issue the government is determined to help men tackle.
The government’s national Men’s Health Policy aims to address the large diversity between the health of men and women.
The initiative has been given a kick start with a grant of $460,000 grant to the National Suicide Prevention Strategy and another $95,000 to encourage men to seek preventative health checks.
generique viagra en ligne acheter The Men’s Health policy will aims to overcome the widespread resistance among men to seek treatment by making health services more male-friendly and to engage men in looking after their own health.
Research in recent years has revealed that not only do men on average die almost five years earlier than women, but they are also three times more likely to commit suicide and to die from HIV/AIDS, lung cancer, emphysema and liver diseases.
Ms Roxon says men’s health is an issue which is too often overlooked.

Premature Ejaculation: International Consensus Will Aid Future Diagnosis, Treatment And Research

Published by poster under Uncategorized

International experts from ten countries have teamed up to develop the first ever evidence-based definition of lifelong premature ejaculation (PE) in the hope that it will aid future diagnosis, treatment and research.
The results of their in-depth study, conducted by the Standards Committee of the International Society for Sexual Medicine, have just been published online by two leading Wiley-Blackwell publications, the urology journal BJU International and The Journal of Sexual Medicine.
They developed their definition after lengthy critical evaluation of the evidence presented in more than 100 studies on PE published over the last 65 years. It was unanimously agreed by the experts that the definition of lifelong PE should be a combination of three key factors:
"Ejaculation which always or nearly always occurs prior to or within about one minute of vaginal penetration."
"The inability to delay ejaculation on all or nearly all vaginal penetrations."
"Negative personal consequences such as distress, bother, frustration and/or the avoidance of sexual intimacy."
However, the team have concluded that at the moment there is insufficient evidence to develop an evidence-based definition of acquired PE, which develops at a stage in a man’s life rather than being a life-long problem.
They have also stressed that more research is needed into the PE issues faced by homosexual men as there is also insufficient evidence to develop a definition for this patient group.
Generic cipro pills no prescription The multi-disciplinary team was made up of 21 experts from the USA, UK, Singapore, Argentina, France, Egypt, Denmark, The Netherlands, Australia and Germany.
It included urologists, psychologists, psychiatrists, a sexual health physician, a primary care physician, a neuro-urology researcher, a clinical pharmacologist, an endocrinologist and a radiation oncologist.
"PE has been a recognised condition for many years and the first topical anaesthetic cream to delay ejaculation was described as far back the 1930s" explains co-author Dr Chris G McMahon, Associate Professor at the University of Sydney and Director of the Australian Centre for Sexual Health in Sydney.
"The premise that PE is a psychosomatic disturbance was first suggested in 1943 and men with PE were recommended to try various treatments such as the stop-start method.
"Various drug treatments have been developed over the last 30 years and in the past 15 years an increasing number of well-controlled, evidence-based studies have demonstrated the effectiveness and safety of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor drugs in delaying ejaculation.
"More recently clinicians and the pharmaceutical industry have been paying more attention to the psychosocial consequences of PE.
"But what has been lacking is a consensus on how lifelong PE should be defined. As a result everyone - from urologists and clinicians working in sexual medicine to the pharmaceutical industry - have been working to different parameters.
"That is why the International Society for Sexual Medicine felt it was vital to bring together international experts to look at the wealth of published data and formulate an evidence-based definition of lifelong PE."
Men with lifelong PE suffer from a cluster of core symptoms, including early ejaculation nearly every time they have intercourse. Approximately 90 per cent ejaculate within 30 to 60 seconds of vaginal penetration and the remaining 10 per cent within one to two minutes.
The definition developed by the Society does not cover men with acquired PE, which develops in men who have previously had normal ejaculatory experiences. This may be due to psychological or relationship problems, erectile dysfunction, an inflamed prostate gland or thyroid dysfunction.
Because the definition has not been put into practice yet, it is not possible to quantify retrospectively how many men fall into the lifelong PE category based on the new evidence-based definition. However, previous research has suggested that as many as 35 per cent men suffer from premature ejaculation of some kind, making it even more common than erectile dysfunction (ED). Unlike ED, which increases with age, PE affects men more or less equally across all age ranges.
"Numerous organisations have tried to define lifelong PE but this is the first evidence-based definition to be developed" stresses Dr McMahon. "It is a vital step forward for men with PE and the clinicians who treat them as it can be used to provide consistent diagnosis and treatment and enable the results of any clinical trials to be compared."
